National Institute of Technology, Ariake College established with the Departments of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Industrial Chemistry. USHIO, Hiroe, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Kumamoto University, appointed as the first President.

Opened at a temporary campus in Masunaga, Arao City.
